EcoFlow STREAM vs Anker SOLIX Solarbank (UK, 2026)

New UK rules — 27 August 2026: SI 2026 No. 848 (made 16 July 2026) creates a legal plug-in route for a solar device with a maximum rated AC output not exceeding 800W that complies with the Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification v2. There is no third-party certification against the specification itself, and IPS v2 §7 says a device merely submitted for registration does not count. Why neither of these is a “plug-in microgenerator” under the new rules

From 27 August 2026 the UK has a defined legal category for plug-in solar. Both products on this page sit outside it — not because anything is wrong with them, but because the definition describes a different kind of device. They stay on the route they already use: hardwired by a qualified electrician, with a G98 notification. Nothing below changes that, and nothing below is a reason not to buy either one.

The definition is worth reading in full, because most coverage compresses it to “800W” and the 800W limb is one of five.

The definition, verbatim. It appears twice in SI 2026 No. 848: at regulation 2(3), inserting a new paragraph (8) into regulation 8 of the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994; and at regulation 3(2), inserting it into regulation 1(5) of the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The wording is identical in both places.

plug-in microgenerator” means a source of energy which—

  1. generates electricity from the direct conversion of sunlight into electricity;
  2. has a maximum rated alternating current output not exceeding 800 watts;
  3. is intended for connection to a low voltage consumer’s installation by means of a standard plug and socket;
  4. is designed to operate in parallel with a distributor’s network; and
  5. is not designed to import electrical energy from a low voltage consumer’s installation for the purpose of storing energy for later supply, other than for control or auxiliary functions permitted by the Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification;

Limb (c): a standard plug and socket

Both products are hardwired to the consumer unit. That is not our characterisation of them — it is EcoFlow’s, in two places on their own UK blog:

“In the UK, a qualified electrician will make a quick, one-time connection to your consumer unit.”

“In the UK, local regulations mean the STREAM DIY Cable must be hard-wired to your distribution board by a certified electrician.”

A device connected to the distribution board by an electrician is not one “intended for connection … by means of a standard plug and socket”. This is also why certification would not change the picture for these two: limb (c) is about what the product is, not about paperwork it lacks.

Limb (e): not designed to import and store

Limb (e) excludes a device designed to draw electricity from the installation in order to store it for later supply. EcoFlow describe the STREAM doing exactly that, as a headline feature:

“time-of-use optimisation, which uses live tariff data from providers like Octopus, EPEX, or Nord Pool and forecast data from Solcast to schedule charging when electricity is cheapest and discharging when it’s most valuable”

“By shifting more of your usage to free solar and off-peak stored energy”

Charging when electricity is cheapest, to discharge later, is importing to store for later supply. Read against limb (e) on its face, that sits outside the definition.

Where this instrument applies

The SI sets out its own extent, and the two paragraphs do different things:

“(3) Regulations 1 and 2 extend to England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. (4) Regulation 3 extends to England and Wales and Scotland.”

Regulation 3 is the one that amends the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002 — the change that makes installing and operating a plug-in microgenerator lawful on the new route. It extends to England, Wales and Scotland. Regulation 2, the plug-approval route, extends to Northern Ireland as well. What otherwise applies in Northern Ireland rests on separate legislation that this instrument does not touch, and we are not going to guess at it.

Three details that have gone unreported

The specification is pinned, not ambulatory. The SI defines it as “the Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification, version 2, published by the Secretary of State on 16 July 2026” — a named version on a named date. If a version 3 appears, the law as drafted keeps pointing at version 2 until the SI itself is amended. Worth knowing before you read a future certificate.

The requirement is not in the definition. It is in regulation 22(1)(c) of ESQCR 2002, as substituted by regulation 3(3): “(c) where the source of energy— (i) is part of a low voltage consumer’s installation, complies with British Standard Requirements; or (ii) is a plug-in microgenerator, complies with the Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification”. If you want one citation, it is regulation 22(1)(c)(ii).

The plug needed its own workaround. Regulation 2(2) inserts a new paragraph (3A) into the 1994 Plugs and Sockets Regulations so a notified body can approve a plug type that “do[es] not conform to BS 1363 because BS 1363 contains a provision which prohibits or restricts the use of the plug for the connection of an electricity-generating device to a socket-outlet” — provided it conforms in every other respect and complies with the specification. The standard British plug standard did not contemplate a plug that feeds the socket; the SI works around that rather than changing it.

Where the specification draws the line

We recorded this as unresolved. It is not. The specification settles it in its own scope, with no need to interpret limb (e) at all. Section 1, verbatim:

“This document applies to only plug-in solar device. It does not apply to other technologies including but not limited to • PV systems according to BS 7671 Section 712; • Building-integrated PV (BIPV); • Plug-in battery systems; • Plug-in solar PV devices integrated with battery systems; • Plug in electricity generation from sources other than solar PV panels.”

Both products on this page are battery systems, so both sit outside the scope of the specification — and regulation 22(1)(c)(ii) of ESQCR 2002 makes compliance with that specification the condition of the plug-in route. Section 8 puts it beyond doubt, requiring that instructions carry “a prominent warning that the plug-in solar device is not intended to be connected to, operated with, or used in conjunction with a battery energy storage system”.

This is a different product class, not a failing one. Both remain exactly what they have always been: hardwired systems installed by a qualified electrician with a G98 notification, which is lawful now and stays lawful after 27 August 2026.
